At Palmer Family Dental in Pittsburgh, PA, we have many options available for patients interested in sedation. There are a variety of reasons to consider sedation for dental treatment, including phobias, anxiety, and overall patient comfort.

One of the most well-known forms of sedation is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Nitrous oxide sedation has a safe, well-established use in dentistry and is a great option for people who are mildly anxious about a procedure, have a severe gag reflex, and for kids.
Medications called benzodiazepines can provide minimal sedation, also known as “anxiolysis,” for adult patients who are good candidates. These medications reduce fear and anxiety and make patients feel tired. As such, we always require patients to have a driver to and from these appointments.
IV moderate sedation, formerly known as ‘conscious’ sedation or ‘twilight’ sedation, is an option we are proud to offer in our office. This modality delivers medicine to the patient through an IV, reducing anxiety, providing pain relief, and inducing tiredness. IV sedation is a great option for more phobic and anxious patients. It is also ideal for patients who just want to be comfortable during a dental procedure. Of course, patients must bring a driver to and from these appointments.
When needed, some patients require deep sedation or general anesthesia. This is provided by oral surgeons and dental anesthesiologists. In these cases, we work with our colleagues to ensure patients get the care they need. This happens when the previously mentioned modalities do not suffice.
