IV Sedation

IV Sedation, A.K.A. ‘Twilight’ or ‘Conscious’ Sedation in Pittsburgh, PA

For patients in Pittsburgh, PA, moderate sedation is an excellent option to help those with dental anxiety or phobia receive the necessary dental care in a relaxed and comfortable setting.

What Is IV Moderate Sedation?

In the past, IV moderate sedation was known as ‘twilight sedation’ or ‘conscious sedation.’ This meant that the patient was not unconscious but in a state of reduced anxiety, less reactive to pain, and tired and comfortable enough to lightly doze in the dental chair. In addition, patients often do not remember parts or all of the procedure after they leave.

Consultation Before Your Appointment

Before patients are scheduled for their IV sedation appointment, we perform a consultation where we review their medical history, medications, allergies, and relevant medical information. At this point, we determine if the patient is a good candidate for this type of sedation.

What to Know for Your Sedation Visit

For the sedation visit, there are a few things we want patients to know:

  • Driver – A driver is needed to bring you to and from the appointment. This person will also receive care instructions for the patient for the remainder of the day, as they may be groggy and tired.
  • NPO (Nothing by Mouth) – Patients cannot eat for 6 hours prior to their appointment time. Patients can drink clear liquids—water, Gatorade, coffee, tea—up until two hours before the appointment.
  • Medications – Patients should take all prescribed medications before the appointment unless instructed otherwise.
  • Clothing – Patients should wear loose, comfortable clothes to allow the dental team to establish IV access and place the vital sign monitors appropriately.
